INFO
Previously the director of quality control at the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange, Aman Adinew was in charge of the first specialty coffee lab in Ethiopia, and then set up the Hambella farm with his brother Michael.
Hambella is located in the Guji zone, and is well known for its high quality grade one and two coffees. This natural lot has been left to dry for 21 days on raised beds, with frequent turning to ensure even drying.
Guji is located within the Oromia region, which contributes to 65% of Ethiopia’s coffee production — around 150,000 tons per year. Most coffee in this region is produced from small plots of of land with low yields, grown alongside other cash crops to maximise returns. However, Hambella is a large farm, sized at over 200 hectares. Employing 28 full time members of staff, Hambella’s team increases to 700 people during the harvest, with 70% of the workforce being women. There are programs for local farmers to work closely with agronomists and processing experts to work on the quality of their coffee, and opportunities for local farmers to have their coffee bought and sold by Hambella on their behalf.
