Description

Kianderi Coffee Factory is located in Central Province, Kirinyaga District, near Kerugoya town. It is currently affiliated to Inoi Farmers Co-operative Society Ltd.

It was established in 1963 and rests on a 7 acres of land serving Kianderi, Kabumbu, Kieni and Kimandi villages. Run with one manager and 3 fulltime members of staff, there is a small casual labour force that enhances this depending on the output of the harvest. At peak season, this would be an extra 4 members of staff, dropping down to just the one in quieter months. The weighing, grading and selection of coffee falls to the permanent staff to ensure standards are maintained, as well as the important role paying the farmer and addressing any complaints or running issues.

Long rains in Kenya tend to fall between March and May, producing the main harvest, with short rains falling later in the year being responsible for the fly crop. Intercropping is discouraged within the cooperative, with an exception for Macadamia as both shade crop and alternative revenue stream. The cooperative has a field committee to provide assistance where necessary.

The vast majority of coffee grown here is SL28 and K7, forming around 99% of the harvest. the remainder is the newer Ruiru11, developed in response to the coffee borer outbreak of 1968 that lead to a 50% loss of harvest in Kenya.
